Pest Control - Silverfish

Silverfish Control & Prevention

Silverfish are elusive, fast-moving insects that often go unnoticed until they start damaging your belongings. Though not dangerous to humans, they can be incredibly destructive to household items like books, wallpaper, and clothing. At Bite Back Pest Control, we provide effective and discreet solutions to remove silverfish infestations from homes and businesses across the region.

Silverfish Identification

 Appearance:

  • Size: Up to ¾ inch (about 19 mm)
  • Colour: Silvery-grey to brown
  • Body: Tapered, fish-like shape with two long cerci and a central terminal filament
  • Movement: Quick, wiggling motion similar to a swimming fish
  • Antennae: Prominent and forward-pointing

You’ll often spot them darting into cracks, under flooring, or behind damp walls.

Are Silverfish Dangerous?

Health Risk:

  • No biting, no venom, and no known disease transmission
  • Rarely contaminate food but may carry bacteria if infestations are severe
  • Prefer moist, dark spaces over kitchens such as basements, bathrooms, and crawlspaces

Conclusion: They’re more of a nuisance pest than a health threat, but still require control to avoid property damage.

Are Silverfish Destructive?

Yes. Silverfish are highly destructive due to their unusual diet: They feed on starches, sugars, and particularly glue which is commonly found in:

  • Books and bindings
  • Clothing
  • Wallpaper paste
  • Paper products
  • Cardboard and canvas

Prevention Tip: Store vulnerable items in airtight plastic containers to avoid damage.
